No food, No drinks and Be quiet!! basic rules in a library??

Hi everyone!

I have been many time lost, but today I would like to comment a post in “Tame the Web” about rules in the libraries.

I reccomend you read at first the post and the comments of different people about that.

The three basic rules are the following:

1. NO FOOD allowed in the library.

2. NO DRINKS in computer stations, the circulation desk, the meeting and study rooms.

3. BE QUIET the library is a quiet study space.

At the first moment the three basic rules could seem to me properly in a library. But in a second reading… something seems to me strange. The following comment is from my point of view as a librarian, a researcher about the user´s behaviour and of course, the main important reason, as a student.

The rules are prohibitions!!! also it remarks the “old librarian point of view about what is a library”.

As other people have commented in the original post, there are too much NO.

And I´m wondering… I can understand that none would like to use this library.

I think that a helpful, useful and good library is not like this because you´re not allowing the users to spent their time there.

Why? because if you cannot drink, in the study and meeting rooms for example, you cannot be there many time!! or if you´re studying, it is normal eat or drink, and is the same if we talk about work in groups.

Something is wrong: first the student receives a negative message from his/her library about his/her behaviour. Secondly the prohibitions about drinks and eat seem to him/her that is not possible spent many time in the library. And finally, the idea about a quiet space seems that the library is not a place to meet or share with other users, friends, students…

In a library with enough resources is possible to have study rooms, or meeting rooms, so every space could have different purposes and different behaviour.

As we had recognized in our study about the student´s behaviour in a Learning Centre (LC) of the Oslo Univeristy Collegue, see here, the students like to be working in groups, so is necessary talk to do it, and they also feel comfortable if they could eat and drink normally. Another surprising fact for us as a foreigner students in Norway, from Spain and Hungary, is that the LC had been very used during our research, more than our university libraries in our countries. We saw that students like BE in the LC, with a high social behaviour that include eat, drink and talk at the same time that they work in group or study, in group also!!! Students do it normally, and the rules of the LC allows them. So I think it is the success. Please take a look in our study, specially the description of the different zones and pictures and the F zone, group rooms, where you can find a group of students working, eating and drinking!!

Of course it doesn´t means that they have to be like pigs!!! a normal person could eat or drink studying without any catastrophic consequence. So, really if we want get students, users, in our libraries I think that we need open our minds and take into account that a library must be a LIFE SPACE, and in a life space you can eat, drink or talk. And, if is necessary for the users, provide study rooms, or spaces, to be the quiet zones. A library, or Learning Centre, could have many different areas for different needs, and every space could have different behaviours and of course, different rules accordingly to the purpuse and needs.

Hi everyone,

today I have finished my Digital Library Learning Project.

I have introduced more practice exercise to support the different Digital Library examples.

Also there are a new section that include a discussion about the Libraries future, where I include my opinion about it.

As I say in my project, we are involving in a change time. The Digital Library subject is really huge and now is under developing. So I hope that my learning project could help people to understand the Digital Libraries, only as overview but being useful and clear.

This picture illustrate the blog´s name, Librarians in Troubles. I think that is so funny. There are two librarians very sad and worry because many people think that the Libraries are going to disappear, and the traditional librarians with them.

I don´t share totally this opinion, but I think that we need improve and adapt our profession. Or really we could finish as the picture show. 

I hope you enjoy my learning project.

I am very proud to announce that this blog has already passed the 1000 visitors, since its inauguration in February this year.

So thank you very much to all people that have been helping me and the professorate from LATINA. Specially thanks to Tord for his constant help and creative guidance.

I need to improve many points of this blogs, but I hope continue working with helpful and interesting content.

What’s about Spain: Learning and Teaching in a Digital World

The use of new technologies in education need change the way to educate, it is not enought put the computer and wait what happens. (by Tord)

Today we have a new task in LATINA, research in our countries to know the current situation about learning and teaching in a digital world.

I have decided just search in the spanish pages mainly. Cause of it the links that I provide here are in spanish.

This links are only some of the few that I had time to consult, and I think are relevant.

About the school and highschool education:

A slideshare about the usage of the new technologies by young spanish people.

From the “Congreso Nacional de Internet en el Aula” (National Congress of Internet in the classroom) a slideshare about the use of blogs in the learning

A  website with a teaching and learning resource for the primary school by the Spanish Ministry of Education. “El mundo de fantasmin”

It application has been develop inside the “Plan Avanza“. This plan has as a goal the integration of the new technologies and their application into the spanish society to empowered their possiblities and competition.

My general idea, based basically on my experience, is that in Spain we are introducing the new technologies in the learning environment and also it is changing many aspects of our education. But today we are  yet in the first steps.The learning staff, institutions, and Ministry of Education are taking into account the new situation about the new learning and teaching methods. 

I think all of them are doing a big effort, many times supported by the develop of digital libraries and its resources, but we need more adaptation time to see the changes.

About the higher education:

Since many years ago, in Spain, we have the UNED, Spanish Distance Education University that used, as many of the normal universities, a Learning Management Systems. This LMS  is closed.

As students I don’t know any Digital Learning in the spanish higher education with an open access. Is possible study a distance course, that at this moment normally include the use and integration of multimedia channels but with a closed used.

Many of them have websites that support the learning materials, forums, and other resource for the distance learning, but always in a closed way.

Learning design at LATINA lesson

Today we have taken a look at the design of a Learning event using the new technologies.
In this case we have seen the Learning Event of our college Ann-Hege, her Educational Event about Textures.
I like very much as she has been able to introduce us in the “textures world”, using her explanations supported by medias, as videos, pictures and music. It had been as a textures trip over the surfaces. I think allways is difficult get the attention of the audience, but a little more if you have an abstract subject.

After get into the textures we have been discussing about our ideal learning at the university.

We have extracted some conclusions, that I think we could achieve.
1. The active role of students and teaching, developing a critical point of view.
2. The teacher as a guide and support.
3. The use of new tools in the daily life lessons, the new technologies, for example the blogging.
4. Students and teachers in a continuing training.
5. Internationalise the studies, students and teachers to face the new globalization world.
6. Integrating and matching the same studies in the different countries, a way to allow student and labour mobility .

My conclusion is more about the obsolescence of the new technologies because this course is from the 2005, more or less, and only in this years we have been changed to the social network and also the creation and distribution of digital contents is totally changed.

Successful Presentations

Public presentations are usually a cause for nervousness and anxiety.
It may represent the most important moment of a hard work, so is normal  that we feel uncomfortable in this situation because also we are under pressure.
But we don’t have to be worry, not at all…
Many people have the same problem, and they have many tips and advice that we can achieve.
Following the advices we can realise about things that we didn’t at the first time and is a good way to improve.
Today we have been taking a look trought many of this tips.

But I think for myself the most important points to have success in a presentation are:
1. Training, to improve our comunication skills
2. Being natural. For example if you need use your hands, it doesn’t have to be a problem when you’re feeling more confidence.
3. Being concise and visual

Study “Presentation”

Preparing our presentation for the LATINA Learning Event, we have to face the best way to do it.

A good website to take into account: Presentation Helper give you many tips and even templates for the slides.

A. Techniques:
Pecha-Kucha, consists in presents 20 images, for a 20 seconds a piece, with a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The presentations keep to be very concise, and the use of images mantain the audience attention.
B. Tools: a presentation program as OpenOffice, Power Point, Adobe, Flash…

To work directly using Internet; Google docs, 280 slides

C. Good advices from this link and my comments

1. Use visual aids, the presentation becoming more interesting
2. Keep it short and sweet, (a limit of time)
3. The rule of three, use a maximum of three points on a slide.
4. Reharse, to become an expert in your presentation and find out mistakes.
5. Tell stories, with anecdotes for example.
6. Don’t put your speakers notes up on the screen, be concise.
7. Video yourself, and you could find out more mistakes and remember the schema.
8. Have a back-up plan, if something is wrong at the presentation
9. Know what slide is coming next, if you have a technical problem and jump over one, you could realise it.
10. Check out the presentation room, be there with time to check and prepare the presentation
11. Check out the spelling!!
12. Don’t be afraid to introduce links with complementary information.

C. On the web:

A good idea and tip for you presentation could be do it interactive and share it in the net. For example put your presentation on your blog and comment it.

If you use links your presentation can become a good tool also.
