An anecdoted about the Digitizing

with one comment

Looking for information about the digital library I have reminded an anecdoted about the digitizing of books, newspapers, historical documents, etc…

I like very much the pekingese dogs. I have been breeding miniatures poodles and japanese spitz, actually I am registered like a breeder in the FCI. I have a dog-show male pekingese I am trying to buy a good female to breed. But it is really difficult! I have been looking for information about his pedigree. Every year I look for it deeply and I normally do not find many. But…

This year I have found finally information. And I am really surprised. I was looking for the ancestors and breeders of my dog. The result has been an article from a magazine of 1914, that is stored in the Project Gutenberg , where it comments a book about the Pekingese and  told something about where they are from and the names of the dogs. In this article is possible read the name of one dog from the same kennel that my dog!! Of Chinatown afix. Also I have found more articles as digitized articles from the New York Times, for example one from 1921 where it explains the results of the Pekingese Annual Exhibition, at the Hotel Plaza in New York.

Using my own example I would like to show how the digitizing is changing the research of information. I’ve been very proud with this information. Now I can say that the line of my dog and his kennel can be traced in time since 1914. So perhaps for you it is a very friki new. But to me like a breeder is totally amazing 🙂

So the possibilities that provide the digitizing are a powerful tool. It is one of the pillars in the Digital Library. I could say many things about it but I think that my example explains very well this fact. I am sure that in some years we are be able to access at new digitized documents and there our labour as librarians and information manager would be change totally. And finally I must to say that this experience results very exiting for me.

And now some pictures of my dog, Imperio (pedigree name Boy de Cubana-Can) He is really cute.
