Adios Paper!!

As you can see we are in a digital environment. We are working on our computers, our information and relations are developing in this “new world”. Also we are expecting more changes and new tools and challenges around the “computers” in our lifes. Then I am totally sure that you have been listening something about the Electronic Paper, Electronic Ink, E- paper or E-ink. I had a teacher at Universitat de Valencia that thought that the printed book is going to dissapear totally. I am not very sure about the term “totally” but I am really sure about “dissapear”. Today the librarians, in many libraries, don’t purchase the professionals magazines on paper format. They prefer the digital access. Of course I agree with them. This choose allows us save time, space, efforts and accessibility. Also it allows a better way to do a librarian cooperation. But the magazines are not the only ones. Today many libraries purchase the service for access to books. Depending on the necessities of everyone. For example the Safari Books Online Service, specialists on computers science books or My iLibrary where you can find many technical subjects.

Then if we are using digital documents, to edit, work and share, and the printed book is going to dissapear, we need a tool to fill, in many ways, the space of the traditional book. We could use our personal computers but many times is not enought. Here is when the E-Paper plays a role.

The E-Paper is trying to introduce in the market since many time ago but at this time is not normal see somebody reading in the bus with one of this machines. But perhaps we only need a couple of years to see it as explain very well this article The Future of Electronic Paper.

I like the idea of work without paper. And may be the people need time to addapt but remind that not many years ago, for example, the mobile phones or the laptops and personal computers were so expensive and not many people could buy its.

Digital Library Projects- Europeana

leave a comment »

europeana-logo-smallStill on the subject of digital libraries, today I would like to mention one of these projects. This is the Europeana projects. Initiated by the European Commission and based at first on the European Library. Some definitions and ideas about Europeana:
Europeana is a search platform to a collection of European digital libraries with digitised paintings, books, films and archives.” ref.
Also “Europeana.eu is a collaboration between universities, research institutes and content providers. The site is a prototype, and in the coming year we will be developing it in response to users’ feedback and making it operational. ” ref.
An interesting article from Rob Davies, her Director, MDR and Scientific Co-ordinator of EuropeanaLocal, has the title of “Europeana: An Infrastructure for Adding Local Content” and there he explains very good many important aspects of the project and how is possible to overcome the difficulties involved in it, the steps to undertake and the goals that they think meet in the coming years. Well as technical problems and how to solve them.
If you wanna learn more about Europeana you can watch this video by Fleur Stigter (2008-12-05)
or read this presentation by Rob Davies (2008-12-05)

An anecdoted about the Digitizing

with one comment

Looking for information about the digital library I have reminded an anecdoted about the digitizing of books, newspapers, historical documents, etc…

I like very much the pekingese dogs. I have been breeding miniatures poodles and japanese spitz, actually I am registered like a breeder in the FCI. I have a dog-show male pekingese I am trying to buy a good female to breed. But it is really difficult! I have been looking for information about his pedigree. Every year I look for it deeply and I normally do not find many. But…

This year I have found finally information. And I am really surprised. I was looking for the ancestors and breeders of my dog. The result has been an article from a magazine of 1914, that is stored in the Project Gutenberg , where it comments a book about the Pekingese and  told something about where they are from and the names of the dogs. In this article is possible read the name of one dog from the same kennel that my dog!! Of Chinatown afix. Also I have found more articles as digitized articles from the New York Times, for example one from 1921 where it explains the results of the Pekingese Annual Exhibition, at the Hotel Plaza in New York.

Using my own example I would like to show how the digitizing is changing the research of information. I’ve been very proud with this information. Now I can say that the line of my dog and his kennel can be traced in time since 1914. So perhaps for you it is a very friki new. But to me like a breeder is totally amazing 🙂

So the possibilities that provide the digitizing are a powerful tool. It is one of the pillars in the Digital Library. I could say many things about it but I think that my example explains very well this fact. I am sure that in some years we are be able to access at new digitized documents and there our labour as librarians and information manager would be change totally. And finally I must to say that this experience results very exiting for me.

And now some pictures of my dog, Imperio (pedigree name Boy de Cubana-Can) He is really cute.
