Hi everyone,

today I have finished my Digital Library Learning Project.

I have introduced more practice exercise to support the different Digital Library examples.

Also there are a new section that include a discussion about the Libraries future, where I include my opinion about it.

As I say in my project, we are involving in a change time. The Digital Library subject is really huge and now is under developing. So I hope that my learning project could help people to understand the Digital Libraries, only as overview but being useful and clear.

This picture illustrate the blog´s name, Librarians in Troubles. I think that is so funny. There are two librarians very sad and worry because many people think that the Libraries are going to disappear, and the traditional librarians with them.

I don´t share totally this opinion, but I think that we need improve and adapt our profession. Or really we could finish as the picture show.

I hope you enjoy my learning project.

What’s about Spain: Learning and Teaching in a Digital World

with 3 comments

The use of new technologies in education need change the way to educate, it is not enought put the computer and wait what happens. (by Tord)

Today we have a new task in LATINA, research in our countries to know the current situation about learning and teaching in a digital world.

I have decided just search in the spanish pages mainly. Cause of it the links that I provide here are in spanish.

This links are only some of the few that I had time to consult, and I think are relevant.

About the school and highschool education:

Article: Tecnología para enseñar

A slideshare about the usage of the new technologies by young spanish people.

From the “Congreso Nacional de Internet en el Aula” (National Congress of Internet in the classroom) a slideshare about the use of blogs in the learning

A  website with a teaching and learning resource for the primary school by the Spanish Ministry of Education. “El mundo de fantasmin”

It application has been develop inside the “Plan Avanza“. This plan has as a goal the integration of the new technologies and their application into the spanish society to empowered their possiblities and competition.

My general idea, based basically on my experience, is that in Spain we are introducing the new technologies in the learning environment and also it is changing many aspects of our education. But today we are  yet in the first steps. The learning staff, institutions, and Ministry of Education are taking into account the new situation about the new learning and teaching methods.

I think all of them are doing a big effort, many times supported by the develop of digital libraries and its resources, but we need more adaptation time to see the changes.

About the higher education:

Since many years ago, in Spain, we have the UNED, Spanish Distance Education University that used, as many of the normal universities, a Learning Management Systems. This LMS  is closed.

As students I don’t know any Digital Learning in the spanish higher education with an open access. Is possible study a distance course, that at this moment normally include the use and integration of multimedia channels but with a closed used.

Many of them have websites that support the learning materials, forums, and other resource for the distance learning, but always in a closed way.

Comments on class:

“LMS= Learning Management System, is build as a classical management school system, are closed systems, the thing that you put inside is not visible for the rest of the world.

The  is opposite, everything is available as you producing, is more productive an creative” by Tord.

Successful Presentations

with one comment

Public presentations are usually a cause for nervousness and anxiety.
It may represent the most important moment of a hard work, so is normal  that we feel uncomfortable in this situation because also we are under pressure.
But we don’t have to be worry, not at all…
Many people have the same problem, and they have many tips and advice that we can achieve.
Following the advices we can realise about things that we didn’t at the first time and is a good way to improve.
Today we have been taking a look trought many of this tips.
From Graphics
But I think for myself the most important points to have success in a presentation are:
1. Training, to improve our comunication skills
2. Being natural. For example if you need use your hands, it doesn’t have to be a problem when you’re feeling more confidence.
3. Being concise and visual

Study “Presentation”

with one comment

Preparing our presentation for the LATINA Learning Event, we have to face the best way to do it.

A good website to take into account: Presentation Helper give you many tips and even templates for the slides.

A. Techniques:
Pecha-Kucha, consists in presents 20 images, for a 20 seconds a piece, with a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The presentations keep to be very concise, and the use of images mantain the audience attention.
B. Tools: a presentation program as OpenOffice, Power Point, Adobe, Flash…

To work directly using Internet; Google docs, 280 slides

C. Good advices from this link and my comments

1. Use visual aids, the presentation becoming more interesting
2. Keep it short and sweet, (a limit of time)
3. The rule of three, use a maximum of three points on a slide.
4. Reharse, to become an expert in your presentation and find out mistakes.
5. Tell stories, with anecdotes for example.
6. Don’t put your speakers notes up on the screen, be concise.
7. Video yourself, and you could find out more mistakes and remember the schema.
8. Have a back-up plan, if something is wrong at the presentation
9. Know what slide is coming next, if you have a technical problem and jump over one, you could realise it.
10. Check out the presentation room, be there with time to check and prepare the presentation
11. Check out the spelling!!
12. Don’t be afraid to introduce links with complementary information.

C. On the web:

A good idea and tip for you presentation could be do it interactive and share it in the net. For example put your presentation on your blog and comment it.

If you use links your presentation can become a good tool also.

Tools to share it: Google docs, Slideshare and even Youtube.

Another resource: Bad presentation problems and its remedies.

Task C: Translate to create topical resources in a language different from English

leave a comment »

Use Wikipedia to find and Google Translate to create topical resources in a language different from English

So now I have to do another assigment!! Ok it looks simple…I am to trying. My Topic: I continue with the Digital Library but now I am interesting to share the advantages that it provide. Just one hour ago I have been posting about this topic in English. So now I think is a good idea translate to spanish and norwegian some parts from the Wikipedia english article “Digital Library” using the Google Translate tool and compare it.  So you can read now the results. I think is a good idea fix some errors in the spanish version. I am sorry for the norwegian. In  my conclusion the spanish version is good. I have to fix only some genre and grammatical errors but is totally understable. I do not kow anything about the norwegian!!

The advantages of digital libraries as a means of easily and rapidly accessing books, archives and images of various types are now widely recognized by commercial interests and public bodies alike.[10]

Traditional libraries are limited by storage space; digital libraries have the potential to store much more information, simply because digital information requires very little physical space to contain it. As such, the cost of maintaining a digital library is much lower than that of a traditional library.

A traditional library must spend large sums of money paying for staff, book maintenance, rent, and additional books. Digital libraries do away with these fees. Both types of library require cataloguing input to allow users to locate and retrieve material. Digital libraries may be more willing to adopt innovations in technology providing users with improvements in electronic and audio book technology as well as presenting new forms of communication such as wikis and blogs; convetional libraries may consider that providing online access to their OPAC catalogue is sufficient. An important advantage to digital conversion is increased accessibility to users. There in also availability to individuals who may not be traditional patrons of a library, due to geographic location or organizational affiliation.

  • No physical boundary. The user of a digital library need not to go to the library physically; people from all over the world can gain access to the same information, as long as an Internet connection is available.
  • Round the clock availability. A major advantage of digital libraries is that people can gain access to the information at any time, night or day.
  • Multiple access. The same resources can be used simultaneously by a number of institutions and patrons
  • Information retrieval. The user is able to use any search term (word, phrase, title, name, subject) to search the entire collection. Digital libraries can provide very user-friendly interfaces, giving clickable access to its resources.
  • Preservation and conservation.Digitization is not a long-term preservation solution for physical collections, but does succeed in providing access copies for materials that would otherwise fall to degradation from repeated use. Digitized collections and born-digital objects pose many preservation and conservation concerns that analog materials do not. Please see the following “Problems” section of this page for examples.
  • Space. Whereas traditional libraries are limited by storage space, digital libraries have the potential to store much more information, simply because digital information requires very little physical space to contain them and media storage technologies are more affordable than ever before.
  • Added value. Certain characteristics of objects, primarily the quality of images, may be improved. Digitization can enhance legibility and remove visible flaws such as stains and discoloration.[11]

(In black the things that I have added to fix it. It is not too much!!)

Task B Creating a Learning Presentation Resource- Latina Day 4

leave a comment »

The task B for today is to create a Learning Presentation Resource using Google and Wikipedia and more than 3 different resources. As I have said in other post I am interesting in the the Digital library, Library 2.0 and Web 2.0. I think it may be a good topic to do my Learning Presentation.

What is a Digital Library (DL) ? In my own words I can define DL in very simply way as

a library in a digital format that is accessible by computers using the World Wide Web.

An interesting article to do a first approximation is : Digital Library from Wikipedia

An example of the work and development of one Digital Library; the case of the Digital Library of Congress

But it is not all. The future of the Digital Libraries is totally amazing and powerful. Please just watch this video

This video shows a change that is happening now.

And finally, if you have time I recommend you watch this video too. It is the spirit of the Digital Libray in person.

One note: at this moment this video has more than 16,000 views!!

I like more my profession when I listen things like that.

Hello world! first post from Latina lesson.

with 3 comments

Hello world! Really is necessary to say hello world!! I am now here in my first Latina lesson writing my first post in  my new blog for the world. I am a erasmus student, from Spain, now in Oslo, Norway. We have started the Latina subject, today at 10 o’clock this morning. It have been very interesting also amazing and now I need to inaugurate this blog like a tool to use in the development of that subject. Why? because Latina is a interactive and modern subject that use the new technologies, like this blog, as a very powerful tool.

Ok I start  to revise what we have been looking today:

First: The Latina’s website is

and the page for today is WEEK A (feb 2-6 2009) Day 1 on this page you can find the schedule of today.

There you can take a look inside the Latina course. And now I would like to do some personal comments from my point of view

1st: the professorship is really nice and cordial!! I have felt really fine when I have been in the classroom, even they have greeted me in spanish!!

2nd: they have a digital black board, the first time I have seen it!

3rd: the explanations in the subjects are really interactive. I like how the teacher use the Latina website to move inside the lesson, using for example tools like videos in youtube, google earth to show where we are from (the participants), slideshare, etc… all the new medias working for us!! I like it very much. Is not necessary take notes of all, you have this information on the website whenever you want. And is really amazing and easy to use.

4th: we start our blogs to continue using this tools. I think it is going to be interesting.
